More than 60 Years in Long Island: HISTORY IN THE MAKING

The Greek Orthodox Community of Saint Demetrios in Merrick, New York was founded in 1961. On December 1959, under the guidance of the late James (Demetrios) Boulukos a meeting took place with the intention to establish a parish in the South Shore of Long Island. In attendance at that meeting were Gus Healy, James Plarikos, Peter Kakouros, Nick George, George Kouimanis, Steve Kalathakis, John Louros, Mike Kayantas, Constantine Kazis, Vassilios Pragias and other Greek Orthodox pioneers of the Community. The South Nassau Hellenic Community was formed in May, 1960 to organize fund raising for the initiation of the Church in the area. Mr. Kazis served as the president until the building was purchased in Freeport, where the Church was located (May 1961). Peter Kakouros was the first elected president at the time when preparations were made for the sanctuary and the adoption of the Community under the canopy of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America. The Reverend Father George Apostolakos held the first services on July 1, 1962. Mr. Gregorios Christopoulos became the third president in 1963. During that year, the Very Reverend Emilianos Tsirpanlis was appointed at the Parish by the Archdiocese in July. He served the Parish until November of 1963. Father Joakim Valasiadis became the parish’s spiritual leader in December, 1963 and served the Community for a period of almost eight years. During his service, membership grew to approximately 140 families (1968) and the Church and the Church Hall were renovated. Pews were installed and the Parish home (that was not being used) was demolished. The Church School enrollment was increased from 35 students to 114.Father Nikolaos Retselas was appointed in the Parish in October of 1971. During that period, the Church choir was enriched under the direction of Alekos Kalimanis, the Nick George, the late Nicholas kakoulidis and then with John Galanoudis at the helm. The junior G.O.Y.A. was formed with Irene Matthews heading it. The Greek Afternoon School of Freeport was incorporated with the Church and two more Schools were established in Merrick to better serve the needs of the youth. The Church School reached 135 students. Classrooms were added in the Church basement, which was also redecorated. Thanks to the generosity of the Parishioners, many religious articles were acquired, including the carved Epitaphios, a sound system and many altar items. The Church membership reached 250 families. The festival was held for the first time on 1977; it has been a successful venue of fellowship and fund raising since then. At Green Forest Cemetery of Marlboro Township, New Jersey, 1495 gravesites were donated. The General Assembly also decided the acquisition of three lots with houses and the construction of a new Church in Merrick. The value of the purchase was $200,000, paid in full at the time of the acquisition. Mr. Demetrios Siderakis was commissioned with the task to provide the architectural design for the edifice. It was built according to traditional Byzantine style Cross shaped with a dome construction. On June 28, 1981 the ground breaking ceremony took place and $62,000 was donated by the faithful in attendance. After the completion of the plans and the approval by the department of Buildings and the Town of Hempstead, on April 1982, a contract was signed and the construction started by J.K. Bono General Contractors, owned by Mr. John Kritikos. The congregation entered the new Church on Palm Sunday on April 15, 1984, when the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated on the premises. His Eminence Archhbishop Iacovos blessed the Church for the first time during the traditional "Thyranixia" (Opening of the Doors) service. His Eminence the Archbishop of (then) North and South America exclaimed about the drive, the enthusiasm and the determination of the few families who accomplished an amazing feat, under the spiritual direction of the Rev. Fr. Nick Retselas: to build a Church of insurmountable architectural excellence and to practice their faith with devotion and commitment.Christian Orthodox faithful from several areas of Greece (mainly Sparta and Chios) comprised the demographics of the Parish in its infancy. The Church was named after the Martyr of the early Church Saint Demetrios the Myrrh Streamer, who is also the patron Saint of Salonica in Greece. The pioneers of the Community were very dynamic and they organized a vibrant Youth, a Greek School, Church School, Philoptochos, Young Adult League, Greek Festivals and Senior Citizens activities.The Community of Saint Demetrios grew even more in the 1990's and to the present day it exhibits great progress in many areas of pastoral and charitable work. I would like to extend our gratitude to the spiritual leaders who served the Parish with devotion and love throughout its rich history. After the faithful service of Fr. Nick Retselas, the Church’s spiritual leadership was headed by Fr. James Moschovitis (of blessed memory), Fr. Paul Palesty, His His Eminence Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh, Fr. Costas Constantinou and Fr. Nikiforos Fakinos. Heartfelt appreciation and gratitude is also deemed to the distinguished past and present presidents, who together with the Parish Councils, the volunteers, and the various Church organizations served Saint Demetrios Community with faith and dedication.On October 25th, 2002, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America blessed the rendering of the Pantokrator (Almighty God) that would later be painted in the dome of the Church. The initiation of the iconography project was met with great success and it is nearing completion with over half a million dollars donated through the generosity of the Parishioners of Saint Demetrios. Mr. George Filippakis is the iconographer responsible with the adornment of the Church; many narrative icons have been inspired by the sermons of the Rev. Fr. Nikiforos Fakinos, who frequently draws inspiration from the painted sacred images to nourish and educate Church School students and adults alike. One such icon, the Martyrdom of Saint Demetrios, is unique and presents an inspiring image of the life and works of the Saint. Mr. Demetris Fillas, chairman of the Iconography Committee, is endowed with the task to continue raising the funds necessary for the beautification of the Church. Since the beginning of the project, more than half a million dollars has been collected for the completion of the sacred images that surround the faithful in the Nave of Saint Demetrios.The most outstanding event in the recent history of the Parish is the visit of His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Sunday, October 25th, 2009. His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew came to Merrick as part of a tour that included a visit to the Mississippi river, New Orleans, Washington, Atlanta and New York City. The nature of the trip was to promote the cause for protecting our planet and raising awareness on the significant concern of water pollution. His All Holiness Bartholomew was welcomed to Saint Demetrios by a delegation of the Youth of the Church, the Parish leadership and the congregation. Archon of the Patriarchate and past president of the Parish Peter Pappas was the Master of Ceremonies for the Patriarchal visit. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios preached on the importance of the Patriarchal trip and the gravity of our collective struggle to protect the environment. His All Holiness remarked on the life of Saint Demetrios, His impressions from His visit and the outstanding love for His daughter, the beloved Archdioce of America. His All Holiness Bartholomew then asked His Eminence Demetrios to approach the throne as He granted the offikion (rank) of Economos to the Pastor of the Parish, the Rev. Fr. Nikiforos Fakinos. The event was charged with emotions of honor and contrition on behalf of our Parish Priest, who remarked on the honor of the visit of His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew; a visit that will be remembered by all the faithful present for the years to come.The most compelling challenge in the life of the Parish is the completion of the Cultural Center. Mr. Steven Papadatos is the architect selected by the General Assembly and the Cultural Center Committee to provide with the schematics necessary for the expansion of the edifice; the proposed structure will include a Gymnasium, an educational wing replete with classrooms, audiovisual room, conference rooms and library, an administrative center with offices, auxiliary rooms, storage areas, a gathering Hall, an outside garden with amphitheatric seating, terrace with a roof garden and professional kitchen. The building will incorporate "green" features that give it an environmentally friendly character, ample natural light and a captivating stance next to the already magnificent structure of the Church. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios blessed the schematics presented by the architect as well as a model of the proposed Center on January of 2005. The Community Center Committee is commissioned with the responsibility to embark on this journey of the project; our collective destination is the completion of a state-of-the-art edifice that will serve the needs of the Parish for the years to come. We anticipate all architectural plans to be completed and filed for permits with the Town of Hempstead before the end of the year. Mr. Nick Stathopoulos, as head of the fund raising Committee, Mr. Demetris Fillas, as chairman of the Community Center Committee, the Parish Council, the leadership and the stewards of the Parish are all collaborating to make this dream come true.

ΠΕΡΙΣΣΟΤΕΡΑ ΑΠΟ 60 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ ΣΤΟ ΜΕΡΡΙΚ ΤΟΥ ΛΟΓΚ ΑΪΛΑΝΤ, ΝΕΑΣ ΥΟΡΚΗΣ

Πριν από 50 χρόνια, μία χούφτα από ονειροπόλους Έλληνες μετανάστες συναντήθηκε σε ένα τοπικό εστιατόριο για να συζητήσει την πιθανότητα να χτιστεί ιερός ναός στο νότιο τμήμα του Λογκ Άϊλαντ της Νέας Υόρκης. Οι πρωτεργάτες αυτής της προσπάθειας, οπλισμένοι με μία βαλίτσα όνειρα και πολύ όρεξη για δουλειά ήρθαν από την Μητέρα Πατρίδα στο πιο όμορφο κομάτι της Νέας Υόρκης για να χτίσουν το μέλλον τους και να μεγαλώσουν τις οικογένειές τους. Και αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι της ζωής τους ήταν, είναι, και θα είναι η πίστη στο Θεό, η αγάπη για τον Ελληνικό πολιτισμό, τη γλώσσα, την ιστορία και τις παραδόσεις τους λαού μας. Αυτές άλλωστε ήταν οι αρχές και τα θεμέλια στα οποία χτίστηκε η Ελληνική Ορθόδοξη Κοινότητα του Αγίου Δημητρίου στο Μέρρικ της Νέας Υόρκης. «Βαπτισμένη» από την χήρα του αειμνήστου Δημητρίου Μπουλούκου, η ενορία ξεκίνησε στο ιστορικό από τους αγώνες για την απελευθέρωση της Αμερικής από το Βασίλειο της Αγγλίας Φρήπορτ, το ελεύθερο λιμάνι της Νέας Υόρκης. Εκεί που αργότερα οι Αφρο-Αμερικάνοι βρήκαν καταφύγιο από τον ρατσισμό, λίγες δεκάδες Ελληνικών οικογενειών χτίσαν σπίτια με επίκεντρο της πρώτη Εκκλησία του Άη Δημήτρη, σε ένα κτίριο που παλιότερα αποτελούσε Εβραϊκή Συναγωγή. Σε αυτό το πολυ-πολιτισμικό μωσαϊκό θρησκειών και παραδόσεων, οι ομογενείς του Λογκ Άϊλαντ αναπτύχθηκαν, εξελίχθηκαν και προόδευσαν. Οι επιχειρήσεις τους επεκτάθηκαν, τα παιδιά τους σπούδασαν, πολλοί από αυτούς έγιναν πασίγνωστοι. Από την οικογένεια Τσαββαλά, του γνωστού Τέλη Σαββάλα, μέχρι και την οικογένεια του γερουσιαστή Σκέλλου, η ομογένεια του Λογκ Άϊλαντ άνδρωσε εξέχουσες μορφές στα γράμματα, την πολιτική, τις τέχνες και τις επιστήμες. Πολλοί ενορίτες του Αγίου Δημητρίου διακρίθηκαν στις επιχειρήσεις, στο δημόσιο βίο καθώς και σε επιμέρους επιστήμες όπως η ιατρική, τα νομικά, η έρευνα και οι πανεπιστημιακές σπουδές. Δεν θα μπορούσε η Εκκλησία να μην ακολουθήσει αυτό το ρυθμό προόδου. Και το πλήρωμα του χρόνου έφτασε στη δεκαετία του 1980, όταν και μπήκαν τα θεμέλια για να χτισεί ο ιερός ναός του Αγίου Δημητρίου στο Μέρρικ της Νέας Υόρκης, μόλις λίγα λεπτά από τη γεννέτηρά του, στο Φρήπορτ.Ο νέος ναός, Σταυροειδής μετά Τρούλου, είναι το ψηλότερο κτίριο του Μέρρικ. Από το μοναδικό λόφο της περιοχής, στο Πάρκο Νόρμαν Λέβυ, ξεχωρίζει λαμπροφόρος ο τρούλος του Άη Δημήτρη, που προστατεύει την περιοχή και τους κατοίκους της και αντανακλά τις ηλιακές ακτίνες όντας ορατός από μίλια μακρυά. Ο ναός είναι καλλιπρεπέστατος με περίτεχνη Βυζαντινή αρχιτεκτονική κατασκευή, έργο του διακεκριμένου αρχιτέκτονα Δημήτρη Σιδεράκη. Η Κοινότητα είχε ήδη αρχίσει να αναπτύσσεται και να αριθμεί περισσότερες από 300 οικογένειες. Οι περισσότεροι αρχικά ήταν από την Σπάρτη και την Χίο, αλλά και άλλες περιοχές άρχισαν να εκπροσωπούνται, όπως η Κύπρος, η Θεσσαλονίκη, η Μικρά Ασία, η Καστοριά,η Κεφαλονιά, η Κέρκυρα, η Κρήτη, η Εύβοια, η Λήμνος, η Πάτρα, η Στερεά Ελλάδα και πολλά νησιά. Σήμερα η Κοινότητα αριθμεί περισσότερες από 400 οικογένειες και οι περισσότεροι είναι συνδρομητές και υποστηρικτές του έργου που γίνεται. Τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια, ο νέος ιερατικώς Προϊστάμενος π. Νικηφόρος Φακίνος έχει δώσει όλη του την αγάπη και το ενδιαφέρον για τη νεολαία, το γήρας, το Ελληνικό και Κατηχητικό σχολείο και το φιλανθρωπικό έργο της Κοινότητας. Σε αυτά τα χρόνια έχει σχεδόν ολοκληρωθεί η αγιογράφιση του ιερού ναού από τον βραβευμένο Αγιογράφο Γιώργο Φιλιππάκη, έχουν έρθει τρεις φορές οι Εύζωνες της Προεδρικής Φρουράς από την Αθήνα, έχει υπερδιπλασιαστεί ο αριθμός των μυστηρίων και ιεροπραξιών, όπως και ο αριθμός μαθητών και μαθητριών στο Ελληνικό και Κατηχητικό σχολείο. Επίσης έχει αποπληρωθεί και το τελευταίο από τα έξι σπίτια που ορίζει η Κοινότητα και στην παρούσα έκταση θα ανεγερθεί σύγχρονο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο και Σχολείο. Ο υπεύθυνος του έργου κ. Δημήτρης Φύλλας, μαζί με τον πρόεδρο του Συμβουλίου κ. Σεραφείμ Σκεντέρη και τα μέλη του κάνουν αδιάκοπες προσπάθειες για την ευμενή του αποπεράτωση. Συνάμα ο ναός έχει την ξεχωριστή τιμή να υποδεχτεί τον Παναγιώτατο Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίο, την Κυριακή 25 Οκτωβρίου 2009. Ο Παναγιώτατος τίμησε τον π. Νικηφόρο με το οφφίκιο του Οικονόμου της ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής και εξήρε το έργο των ευεργετών και συντελεστών της Κοινότητας. Φέτος, οι πασίγνωστοι καλλιτέχνες του πενταγράμμου Άλκηστις Πρωτοψάλτη και Στέφανος Κορκολής στόλισαν το όμορφο μωσαϊκό της ιστορίας του Αγίου Δημητρίου με το διαμάντι της φωνής, της μουσικής και του θεόδοτου ταλέντου τους.Έτσι εκτιλίσσεται αυτή η όμορφη ιστορία της ενορίας μας, γεμάτη περιπέτειες ενός παραμυθιού, αλλά πλημμυρισμένη με αλήθειες της ζωής, χαμόγελα, δάκρυα, κόπο και αγώνα. Φέτος γιορτάζουμε τα ξεχωριστά γεννέθλια της όμορφης Κοινότητάς μας που γίνεται 50 χρόνια νέα και δυναμική. Είναι τιμή μας που στα 50 χρόνια, ένα σταθμό και ορόσημο για την Εκκλησία, τα όνειρά μας και οι αναμνήσεις μας θα έχουν την μουσική υπόκρουση της Άλκηστης και του Στέφανου, που συνθέτουν, τραγουδούν και εμπνέουν τους φιλόμουσους ανά τη γη. Στην ταινία της ζωής μας χρειαζόμαστε μουσική, και δεν θα μπορούσαμε να είχαμε διαλέξει κάτι ιδανικότερο. Η εκδήλωση του εορτασμού της Κοινότητας του Αγίου Δημητρίου έγινε την Κυριακή 30 Οκτωβρίου στο Φλόραλ Παρκ (Floral Park Terrace, 250 Jericho Turnpike, Floral Park, New York). Εκεί θυμηθήκαμε πως όλα άρχισαν, που μάς έφερε ο Θεός, ώστε και να προσευχόμαστε για το που θα πάμε στο μέλλον. Και να σκεφτείτε, όλα ξεκίνησαν από ένα μικρό εστιατόριο με μια χούφτα ονειροπόλους Έλληνες!
